Movie Quote Monday: 10 Things I Hate About You

"Don't let anyone ever make you feel like you don't deserve what you want."

If you have never seen the 90's classic 10 Things I Hate About You, drop everything and watch it. I’m sure it’s on some streaming site. You have no excuse anymore. It’s a beautiful and hilarious romantic comedy based on the brilliant play, Taming of the Shrew, by Shakespeare. It’s a film that men and women can relate to.

It focuses on a sweet boy, Cameron, who is trying to win over his high school crush, Bianca. Problem is, Bianca’s dad has a rule: Bianca can’t date until her older sister Kat does. This wouldn’t be so bad if Kat wasn’t a crazy, full of rage teenage girl. Mania insues when Cameron pays Patrick, the weirdest and most rebellious guy in school, to take out Kat.

But his plan is ruined for a moment when he realizes Bianca was just using him to peruse the hottest guy in school. As he begins to pout, Patrick looks at him and says,

“Don't let anyone ever make you feel like you don't deserve what you want.”

Now, let’s explore two different aspects of this statement. One, you need to go for what you want and not let other people make you feel like you can’t have it. We waste so much time believing the lies other people say about us. We spend too much time giving up before we even start because someone tells us we are not enough.

However, what I think most people miss is that they believe we deserve and should have whatever we want. Almost like we have a right to whatever we want. We do not. We do not deserve everything we want. Most blessings we receive in life we do not deserve at all. However, when I hear this quote it strikes me every time because I want to believe that we deserve a chance to go for whatever we want. We may not always be successful, but that is not the point. The point is that we do deserve a chance to try.

In the film, after Cameron hears this, he tells Bianca how he feels. He tells her he hates how she used him and how she hurt him. But despite all that he still liked her. And he won the girl, by being honest. Yet, even if he hadn't won the girl, even if she had flat out rejected him, well he took his chance. He took advantage of what he deserved, a chance with the girl he liked.

So do not let anyone make you think you have no chance. There is always a chance to get that dream job, to travel somewhere, to find the love of your life. You have a right to fight for what you want, and even if you fail, well at least you had took a shot.

Stay Excellent,

Megan
