Movie Quote Monday: Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

“There is some good left in this world Mr. Frodo, and it’s worth fighting for!”

So when I got my tonsils out recently, I realized the best way to spend my time was by watching movies. So I started off watching Lord of the Rings, The Two Towers. I watch these movies all the time and each time they inspire me a little bit more. They are just such amazing films. Now in the monologue that Sam gives near the end of the movie is probably one of the most well known speeches out of the films. But ya know, this year this quote hit my soul in a different way. For anyone who hasn’t seen the movie, luckily this monologue does not spoil anything.

Sam begins this monologue by saying, “By rights we shouldn’t even be here.”

How often have you thought that this past year. From a pandemic hitting our world as well as political turmoil, I have found myself asking “How did we get here? We shouldn’t be here”. But fact is we are. My next question is, what are we going to do about it?

What I love about this scene is how Sam relates their experience back to stories they grew up hearing. It’s amazing how stories constantly have an effect on our lives, if we are wise enough to learn from them. Sam explains that the stories that really matter were not the ones that were simple. They were stories that were dark, dangerous, and filled with trials. He explains that sometimes you might not want to know the end of a story because,

“How could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad happened?”

This past year I have wondered this same question. How will life go back to normal? Or will it? Fact is, time moves forward and things will get worse and then get better. You have to fight and push yourself to never give up. You have to hold on to what you learn in the trials and the dark times. And you may ask why keep trying? Why not give up? What in this world is worth holding on to? Well in The Two Towers, Sam has the perfect answer, he states,

“There is some good left in this world Mr. Frodo. And it’s worth fighting for.”

Let that sink in. Do you believe that? Because I think we forget that sometimes. There is so much good in this world. It’s easy to think everything is terrible and there is no silver lining. It takes almost no effort to be negative and live in darkness. Think about it this way, when you sit in the dark, like pitch black darkness, and someone turns on the light, what happens? Your eyes burn, you squint and you almost want to go back to the dark, that was easier then facing this blinding light. But after a while your eyes adjust and you realize how beautiful light really is, even though it burned your eyes for a bit.

So here is your challenge for today, turn on the light. Go and find the good in your life and fight for it. If you don’t see that much good around you, then go do some good. Take the time to listen to the people around you. Learn from others and continue moving through this journey. If more people would take the time to find the good throughout their life, the world would be better off.

Now don’t misunderstand me, I’m not saying be overly optimistic and ignore the horrible things that are going on right now. But fighting hate and evil with more hate and evil is pointless. Constantly worrying over things you can’t change is futile. Being pessimistic and giving up has never brought anything but misery.

So find the good and run after it because it is worth fighting for! Helping others is worth fighting for. Family is worth fighting for. Friendships are worth fighting for. Love is worth fighting for. Keep fighting for what is right and we will make it through this one day at a time.

Stay Excellent,
Megan
