Movie Quote Monday: Good Will Hunting

"You'll have bad times, but it'll always wake you up to the good stuff you weren't paying attention to."

Good Will Hunting, released in 1997, was created due to the amazing collaboration between Gus Van Sant, Matt Damon, and Ben Affleck. The story itself is rather simple, yet every character is so complex and interesting. The realism it shows is one reason why, in my opinion, it is one of the greatest movies ever made. This movie is in my top 10 because the writing is just so good and actors do an exceptional job of making you feel every word.

In one of the best performances of his career, Robin Williams plays Will’s therapist, Sean. I love his character so much because you see how dynamic he really was. He was such a  phenomenal talent and is still missed. My favorite parts of the movie are the therapy sessions between Will and Sean. During one of the sessions Sean tells Will,

"You'll have bad times, but it'll always wake you up to the good stuff you weren't paying attention to."

Will spends a good portion of the movie running away and fighting everything good in his life. He ran away so much that all he saw was the awful things in his life. He viewed his life through a tunnel, blind to everything around him.

How often are we guilty of that? How often do we run from good things and focus solely on all the bad things around us?  I know I’m guilty of only seeing everything I lack and not taking the time to  notice how much I’ve gained!

The beauty of this quote is that it’s real. It’s not flowery or fluffy. Sometimes you are in a bad spot and you can’t ignore it. You can’t erase it. Yet, that’s not the point. You can allow the bad times to show you good. Sometimes it’s as simple as seeing good in a neighbors kind greeting. Or seeing good in the fact that you have the ability to be loved by people. Or seeing good in the fact that you are able to live in this rather incredible world.

Wake up! Wake up to the good around you! Let the bad things be an alarm to remind you that no matter what, there is good...most of the time it’s good you’ve never even noticed. That’s a crazy thought. That we can have so much going for us, and we don’t even notice. Take the time to notice...

Wake up and Stay Excellent,

Megan
